Francis "Frank" Delfino is one of the main protagonists of How to Get Away with Murder. He acts as Annalise's assistant throughout the show as well as Laurel Castillo's boyfriend/lover. Despite his loyalty to Annalise, it is eventually revealed that he had gone behind Annalise's back to work with her husband Sam Keating to kill Lila Stangard after Sam discovers that Frank has killed Annalise's unborn baby after being paid off to crash into her car. Desperate, Frank travels with Wes to New York to confront Wes's father, the man who paid Frank to crash into Annalise, and shoots him dead on the sidewalk. He then leaves Annalise and Laurel behind, spending the first half of Season 3 running from them.

At the start of Season 6, Laurel goes missing which makes it Frank's top priority, until he abandons his goal by being in a relationship with Bonnie Winterbottom. He stays with her with him repeatedly telling her that he loves her. Annalise tells Bonnie a big secret that she cannot tell Frank. Bonnie tells him the secret that his birth parents are none other than Sam and Hannah Keating, and as a result he's the product of incest. After the truth has been revealed, Frank threats Hannah's lawyer to obtain more information to help Annalise win her case. He gains access to a recording of a conversation Hannah had with Xavier Castillo implicating State Governor Lynne Birkhead is solely responsible for the death of Nathaniel Lahey Sr. Shortly, after exposing her corruption, Annalise won her case. As the trial ended, she spoke outside the courthouse to the press where Frank showed up with a gun with the intent to shoot Birkhead, killing her. However, Frank was shot fatally by the courthouse security in retaliation. He tells Bonnie that he had to make it right before dying in her arms on the steps of the courthouse.

He was portrayed by Charlie Weber.

Biography[]

Frank was born in 1980 in Philadelphia, as biological son of Sam Keating and Hannah Keating, product of their incestuous relationship. Shortly after, he was adopted by the Delfino family. Frank's father was very strict (but not necessarily abusive) with his son throughout his childhood.

When he was 13 years old, Frank got fed up with his father's strict punishments, and began planning to kill him for weeks. When the opportunity arises, Frank runs over his father and leaves him suffering under the car, thinking that he hadn't done well. Frank was eventually sent to prison for 10 years. He was on parole many times, but it was denied due to his misconduct.

10 years prior to the series, Frank is alone in his cell until a couple of guards inform him that he has a visitor. He is taken to the visiting room where he meets Dr. Sam Keating. Sam reveals that his sister Hannah knows his Aunt Bev, and asks Frank why he doesn't want to see his family, to which he says that he is in confinement, but Sam reminds him that it is no longer the case. When Sam tells him that his family really knows that Frank is eligible for parole, Frank is reluctant to get out of jail. However, Sam tells him that he knows that deep down he wants to be free, and offers his help. When Sam convinces his wife Annalise to visit Frank in jail, she agrees. During the visit, she informs him that the only way to get out of prison is by admitting his guilt. Frank comments that she is different to how he imagined her to be, meaning that Sam is white and she not. Annalise lists Frank's most recent crimes, calling him "moron", since no one who wants out would commit such crimes while on parole. Frank finally admits that he has always been a moron. Not long after, Sam visits him again, saying that Annalise can only get him out if Frank cooperates, and tells him that the only reason he can't get out is that he doesn't forgive himself for his actions. Sam tries to convince him that it was an accident and that Frank didn't know what he was doing, but he explains that he has been planning it for weeks, and that he only regrets not doing it right. Sam still thinks that Frank should get out of prison, and tries to convince him that he's a good person and that he is here to help him get out.

Annalise then gets convinced by Sam into taking Frank's case and goes to see him. She admits that these kinds of cases take time, but for some reason Sam believes in him. She tells him that she will help him on the condition that Frank doesn't lie to her again. He agrees, and Annalise becomes his lawyer. Annalise asks him to tell every detail about the attempted murder to his father so he can mount his defense. At that moment, Annalise becomes nauseous and throws up in the dumpster. Frank asks her if she's pregnant, and she realizes that she is. Annalise then later wins Frank's case, making him to be released from prison.

Mahoney Case[]

After he got released from prison, Sam persuaded Annalise to hire Frank as her paralegal. In 2005, Annalise calls Frank into her office, where she shows him a suit, she bought him for their trip to Ohio. He then says yes only for Annalise to tell him that he cannot go to bars to pick up girls to ensure their focus on their case. Sam overhears that Annalise will be in Ohio for a month to which he tells Frank and Annalise that he will be visiting her for the weekend, but she refuses as she must concentrate on the case. While her students work on the case, Frank flirts with Laurel in front of Bonnie and Annalise. Later on, Annalise calls Frank to her office where she scolds him for failing to take the papers to the Mahoney case. She then forces him to stop flirting with Laurel and concentrate on the case at hand. In the courtroom in Ohio, Annalise says the witness G-34 will confirm live anonymously, should everyone treat her with importance as every witness in the trial. Annalise then scolds Frank and stops when Wallace arrives. He then takes the day off and returns a day later finding out from Annalise that their main witness is dead. Wallace Mahoney walks into the hotel room to talk with her privately. Frank goes to a bar where he sees Lisa Cameron where she gives out the number of her hotel room to seduce Frank to going to her room. She then grabs a duffel bag bribing him with cash to plant a bug in Annalise's apartment, then they have sex afterwards.

After this, Frank, after an argument with Annalise at the hotel, Frank leaves a microphone under the table in her room without her noticing. He then meets up with Lisa, telling her that he's already done it. She says that Annalise will never know it was him, handing him a lot of money before leaving and assuring hkm that they would "see each other again". Frank leaves with all the money handed over, but deep down he feels guilty for what he just did. After Annalise's car accident (in which she loses her baby) happens, Frank meets Sam at the hospital, telling her that it was all his fault. Sam denies it at first, claiming it was because of the accident, but Frank reveals that he caused it himself, as they told him they wanted to get the case dropped. Sam reacts furiously and grabs Frank by the neck, releasing him once he accepts that he was responsible for the accident. Sam tells him that Annalise must never find out about this, and despite Frank's pleas, Sam threatens to destroy him if he dares to tell her.

Murder of Lila Stangard[]

Nine years later, Sam called Frank telling him to kill Lila Stangard, who sam was having an affair, with along with her unborn baby. It is revealed that he made him do so because of his role when he killed Annalise's and Sam's baby. He complied and then went to the roof of the sorority building where Lila stayed at and strangled her to death. He then disposed of her body in the water tank and left. Rebecca found her body, but she kept her mouth shut that she ever saw her body inside the tank.
