Zombie decks in Yu-Gi-Oh! use a variety of effects that activate and bring Monsters back from the Graveyard. This makes Zombies a great choice for players looking for a deck that’s difficult to shut down and has the potential to come back from the brink of defeat.

Many modern Yu-Gi-Oh! decks are defined by their Extra Deck Monsters, and Zombies are no exception. With about 40 Fusion, Synchro, XYZ, and Link Monsters to choose from, there are several options for building an Extra Deck with the Zombie type. From taking control of your opponent’s Monsters to bringing themselves back from the Graveyard, the effects of Extra Deck Zombies can truly change the way you play this classic TCG.
7 Eldlich The Mad Golden Lord
✕ Remove Ads
One of the boss monsters of the Eldlich archetype, this Fusion Monster normally requires an Eldlich Monster and one Level 5 or higher Zombie Monster to summon. While this isn’t an easy requirement to fulfill (especially without any Eldlich cards), Eldlich the Mad Golden Lord is worth the cost. Not only does this Monster have 3,800 attack and 3,500 defense, but it is also immune to destruction by battle or card effects. What’s more, this Fusion Monster lets you tribute one of your Zombie Monsters in order to take control of an opponent’s Monster.
Even decks without Eldlich cards can summon the Mad Golden Lord thanks to the Trap card Waking the Dragon. When this set Trap is destroyed by your opponent, it allows you to immediately Special Summon a Monster from the Extra deck. If your Zombie deck makes use of Trap cards, adding a copy of Waking the Dragon is a simple way to give you more paths to winning a duel.
6 Vampire Sucker

Requiring any two Zombie Monsters to bring out to the field, Vampire Sucker can be used in virtually any Zombie deck. This Link Monster has a few effects, all of which complement each other. Firstly, this card gives you the option to tribute a Zombie Monster your opponent controls as a tribute for a Tribute Summon. In combination with the Field Spell Zombie World (a card that turns every Monster on the field into a Zombie type), this effect can help you get rid of nearly any Monster.
With its second effect, Vampire Sucker lets you Special Summon an opponent’s Monster from the Graveyard to their field once per turn, and when you do so that Monster becomes a Zombie type. Additionally, when a Zombie Monster is Special Summoned from either Graveyard, you draw one card. Considering the massive array of options that being able to tribute your opponent’s Monsters gives you, this last effect is basically a bonus.
5 Dragonecro Nethersoul Dragon

A bit of an unusual Monster, Dragonecro Nethersoul Dragon is not a Zombie type. Instead, it is, as its name loudly suggests, a Dragon. However, this Fusion Monster is made for Zombie decks — with two Zombies being its listed Fusion material.

Nethersoul Dragon cannot be destroyed by battle, but it also can’t destroy other Monsters in the traditional way. Monsters that battle this Fusion Dragon have their attack points reduced to 0 at the end of the Damage Step, then you Special Summon a “Dark Soul Token.” These Zombie-type tokens gain attack points equal to that of the Monster you battled before summoning them — and they most certainly can destroy Monsters.
It’s relatively easy to get this Monster on the field with the Spell card Dragon’s Mirror. With this Spell you can Fusion summon a Dragon Monster using material from the field or Graveyard. Since Nethersoul Dragon has the broad requirement of any two Zombie Monster and Zombie Monsters have a knack for winding up in the Graveyard, adding just a single copy of Dragon’s Mirror gives you an easy way to bring out a 3,000-attack-point monstrosity.

4 Red-Eyes Zombie Necro Dragon
Red-Eyes Zombie Necro Dragon is an effective brute-force option for Zombie decks. This Level 7 Synchro Monster gains a humble 100 attack and defense for every Zombie on the field and in either Graveyard. Additionally, when another Zombie Monster is destroyed while Red-Eyes is on the field, you can Special Summon a Zombie from either Graveyard.
While both of these effects are only decent on their own, the Field Spell Zombie World turns this Monster into a duel winner. With Zombie World in effect, all Monsters on the field as well as in the Graveyards are treated as Zombies. This means Red-Eyes starts gaining stat increases for basically every Monster that’s been summoned. And, more importantly, it gives you the ability to steal Monsters from your opponent’s Graveyard.

3 Number 23: Lancelot, Dark Knight Of The Underworld
Number 23: Lancelot, Dark Knight of the Underworld is an XYZ card with an elaborate name and effects that live up to it. While it has XYZ material, this 2,000-attack Monster can declare direct attacks. And when it does take out a significant chunk of your opponent’s life points, it also lets you target one of their face-up Monsters and destroy it.

If this Zombie’s offensive capabilities aren’t impressive enough, maybe its defense will win you over. Once per turn, you can detach an XYZ material from this card to negate the activation of any effect. While its reliance on XYZ material means you won’t be able to use this effect more than once or twice, having this option makes an already useful card one of the best Zombies in the TCG.

2 Immortal Dragon
With a measly 500 attack points, Immortal Dragon is not all that useful on its own, but incredibly effective as a tool for setting up your field. During the Main Phase, this Level 6 Synchro lets you send a Zombie Monster from your deck to the Graveyard, then make this card’s Level equal to the difference between the two cards. Other than being able to easily search out Monsters with Graveyard effects, this effect is great to have since it makes it easier to Special Summon the Synchro or XYZ Monster you need in any given situation.
Immortal Dragon can also Special Summon itself from the Graveyard when one of your other Zombies is destroyed by battle. Unfortunately, this Synchro Monster is then banished the next time it leaves the field, so it only somewhat lives up to its name.

1 Yuki-Onna, The Absolute Zero Mayakashi
This Link 4 Monster requires at least two Zombie Monsters to summon, but will likely require three or four more often than not. This steep requirement is worth it for an effect that can functionally take down most Monsters. While Yuki-Onna, the Absolute Zero Mayakashi is on the field, the activated effects of your opponent’s banished Monsters are negated.
But this Link Monster's greatest strength is its ability to negate Monster effects on the field. When a Monster is Special Summoned from the Graveyard or a Monster effect is activated in the Graveyard (with the exception of those that occur during the Damage Step), this card lets you target one face-up Monster, change its attack to zero, and negate its effects if you do so. Since Zombie decks constantly use Graveyard effects and bring Monsters back to the field, Yuki-Onna’s effect is relatively easy to activate.
