How To Find Every Gold Critter
Besides fishing and selling, there are quite a few things players can do after capturing many of the critters that populate the world of Terraria. There are even some rare golden critters that can be found...if one knows how.

There are 13 types of golden critters overall in Terraria, and the method of finding each is as diverse as the list itself, for there is pretty much a golden variant for every type of regular critter in the game. Just be sure to keep one's eyes peeled, as the opportunities to spot them will be far and few in between.
How To Find Every Gold Critter
A common trend that one should always remember when hunting golden critters is that each appears just like non-golden variants of their species. Though, their spawn rate is just very low (below 1%), so finding some of them will take lots of patience and exploring rather than the determination and planning needed to take down a boss. One of the best tactics for finding specific golden critters in Terraria is to explore the biomes that their species naturally spawns within. After sighting them, simply scoop them up with one's preferred Bug Net to collect them into the player's inventory.
Alternatively, it is possible to increase the chance of a gold critter spawning by using one of the many corresponding Statues in the game, such as, for example, the Fish Statue for spawning more goldfish.
Gold Birds
- Forest biome
- Snow biome
- The Hallow
These can be spotted fluttering about the grass and trees of certain surface biomes. They can be hard to spot and catch, so some form of flight could be helpful.
Gold Bunny
- Any surface biome
These golden hares can sometimes be seen hopping about tall grass, like other bunnies. They aren't particularly fast or resilient, so trapping one once spotted will be easy.
Gold Butterfly
- Forest biome
Slowly floating above flowers in a forest, Gold Butterflies can often be seen where there is bright plantlife along the ground. They can sometimes be tricky to distinguish from yellow species of butterfly, though, "gold" in Terraria means a darker yellow with a brownish-yellow outline. Gold Butterflies have a Bait Power of 50%, which can make them great for fishing.
Gold Dragonfly
- Any surface biome
Like bunnies, dragonflies can be found in any surface biome, and are thereby one of the easiest gold critters to come across. Gold Dragonflies also have a Bait Power of 50% for excellent fishing ventures.
Gold Frog
- Jungle biome
Leaping around dense jungles, players can, on occasion, spy a Gold Frog. This is one time where a Jungle biome's mostly green visual aesthetic will be helpful, as the yellowish tinge of the Gold Frog's body will be comparatively easy to spot as opposed to their green kin.
Gold Goldfish
- Large bodies of water
Since fish spawns are a bit different, due to needing to be caught from a body of water, there isn't a set biome where one can find goldfish in general. However, this also means that any large body of water would work, though, using a Fish Statue to increase the spawn rate can help a lot more in this specific case.
Gold Grasshopper
- Any surface biome
Another species of critter that can spawn in any surface biome, players will have to take a slightly different approach for increasing the odds of encountering a Gold Grasshopper than for Gold Bunnies or Gold Dragonflies. Grasshoppers spawn when breaking tall grass, so players will have to do a lot of that in order to up the odds of spotting and catching a Gold Grasshopper. This critter possesses a Bait Power of 50%, making it equal to the Gold Dragonfly and Gold Butterfly as bait.
Gold Ladybug
- Any surface biome (Windy Day)
Like their non-gold kin, Gold Ladybugs only spawn during the Windy Day event, which is mostly random, so this gold critter can potentially take the longest to find. Similar to the other gold insects, the Gold Ladybug possesses a Bait Power of 50%.
Gold Mouse
- Any underground biome
These shiny little mammals will only be found underground, so be sure to bring some tools and lighting when exploring for these gold critters.
Gold Seahorse
- Ocean biome
Players will have to head out into open water to find this golden critter. The Gold Seahorse is found among the waves, so supplies that will aid one while swimming will be the most helpful in such adventures.
Gold Squirrel
- Any surface biome
These bushy-tailed critters can be found scurrying about any above-ground biome, and, like other gold critters, can be made into a type of food called a Golden Delight, which buffs all stats and increases HP regeneration for 48 minutes.
Gold Water Strider
- Any surface biome (Day)
Arachnids such as these can be seen on the surfaces of ponds in any above-ground biome, though only during the day. In line with the trend set by the other gold insects, the Gold Water Strider also possesses a Bait Power of 50%.
Gold Worm
- Any surface biome
In addition to the more traditional means of finding a gold critter, players can also cause worms to spawn by sometimes breaking background objects or using a Can of Worms item. This invertebrate has a Bait Power of 50%, so it is another great critter to use as fishing fuel.
