An SUV is classified as a vehicle that has a body-on-frame design. This means that the body of the vehicle is separate from the chassis. It features a two-box design in which the engine bay and cabin are considered as two separate spaces. The configuration lets people and cargo be loaded inside the vehicle. These often come in a five-door configuration.
SUVs are great for those who want to carry people and or cargo around. Modern SUVs now feature a seven-seater layout. These let more people be carried around while maintaining a tough exterior. With options to go 4x4 or 4x2, SUVs are a popular choice for off-roaders or those who have to take uneven surfaces and changing road conditions daily.
Popular midsize SUVs in the Philippines include the Isuzu mu-X, Toyota Fortuner, Mitsubishi Montero Sport, Ford Everest, Nissan Terra, and Chevrolet Trailblazer. All these come paired with powerful diesel engines. Bigger full-size SUVs in the Philippines include the Toyota Land Cruiser, Nissan Patrol, and Ford Expedition.
These are the newly-launched SUVs in 2019, which either comes as all-new or refreshed. The SsangYong Rexton officially returns to the Philippine market. The Mitsubishi Montero Sport and Ford Everest both got facelifted, as well as the Nissan Terra which now carries an updated infotainment system. The Chevrolet Trailblazer, on the other hand, got a new Phoenix variant which was showcased at the Manila International Auto Show, while the Toyota Fortuner got an updated infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
For 2020, expect additional variants for the Ford Everest, which was initially launched with 4x4 and 4x2 trims. The Montero Sport GT 4x4 variant is also expected to enter the Philippines by Q1 2020.
