Revolutionizing Medical Imaging with DeepSight Technology - Siemens Software Podcast Network (1)

By Katherine Cerrone

Ultrasound imaging has long been a cornerstone of medical diagnostics, helping doctors and healthcare professionals visualize internal organs, monitor the growth and development of fetuses, and guide minimally invasive procedures. However, despite their widespread use and proven efficacy, traditional ultrasound machines and medical imaging devices in general still leave a lot to be desired, particularly in complex cases.

In this month’s podcast, host Kevin Blevins speaks with Josh Arnone, Senior Engineer at DeepSight Technology, a US startup company developing hardware, software, and AI technologies that vastly improve image quality and extend the depth of penetration of medical diagnostic ultrasound.

In this episode, Josh explains how DeepSight uses different technologies with superior sensing capabilities to overcome the limitations of traditional ultrasound imaging. You will learn about how Siemens tools are used at DeepSight to enable efficient mechanical engineering and surface modeling. You will also hear about other projects at DeepSight aimed at applying their sensing technology to various medical fields.

What You’ll Learn in this Episode:

  • How DeepSight got started (8:17)
  • Key challenges and milestones the company has seen along the way (11:55)
  • How DeepSight is different from traditional ultrasound (17:06)
  • Software used at DeepSight(23:17)
  • Other projects DeepSight is currently working on besides ultrasound (25:45)

FAQs

What is the best medical imaging technology? ›

Advance medical imaging modalities such as PET/CT hybrid, three-dimensional ultrasound computed tomography (3D USCT), and simultaneous PET/MRI give high resolution, better reliability, and safety to diagnose, treat, and manage complex patient abnormalities.

How has medical imaging changed over time? ›

Medical imaging has improved immensely since the first x-rays were taken over 120 years ago. There is much more accuracy in diagnosing a medical problem and because of these advances, there is also much less need to perform exploratory surgery.

What are the four types of medical imaging? ›

There are many different types of imaging, such as X-rays, CT (computed tomography) scans, MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) and ultrasound. Each imaging type uses a different technology to create an image.

Which imaging tech makes the most money? ›

Top Radiology and Medical Imaging Salaries
  1. Nuclear Medicine Technologist | $54,000 - $124,000. ...
  2. Interventional Radiological Technologist | $54,000 - $119,000. ...
  3. Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (aka Ultrasound Technologist) | $52,000 - $104,000. ...
  4. Cardiovascular Technologist | $46,000 - $103,000.

What technology is better than MRI? ›

Advantages of CT Scans

Because this procedure produces results so much faster than an MRI, it is doctors' preferred choice for a scanner for making a diagnosis in an emergency.

What are the new innovations in medical imaging? ›

New and improved technologies include dual-energy CT scans which reduce radiation doses while providing high-quality images. These scans use two different types of radiation to produce images, enabling radiologists to differentiate between healthy and diseased tissues more accurately.

Is there better imaging than MRI? ›

Generally, CT scans are better at spatial resolution, while MRIs are better at contrast resolution. That means CT scans are good at showing us where the edges of things are — where this structure ends and that other one begins.

What are the controversial topics in medical imaging? ›

Conclusion: Current controversial topics associated with imaging-based screening include false-positive results, incidental findings, overdiagnosis, radiation risks, and costs.

What are the negatives of medical imaging? ›

Risks
  • a small increase in the possibility that a person exposed to X-rays will develop cancer later in life. ...
  • tissue effects such as cataracts, skin reddening, and hair loss, which occur at relatively high levels of radiation exposure and are rare for many types of imaging exams.

What is the oldest medical imaging technique? ›

X-RAY. X-rays are the oldest and most commonly used medical imaging technique. X-rays were discovered in 1895 and first used to image human tissue in 1896. X-rays use ionizing radiation to produce images of a person's internal structure by sending beams through the body.

What is the latest technology in MRI? ›

MRI technology is being used in new and innovative ways, including functional MRI (fMRI) to study brain activity, diffusion MRI to map the structure of white matter in the brain, and MR angiography to visualize blood vessels. These advancements are helping to expand the capabilities of MRI and improve patient care.

What are the latest advancements in radiography? ›

Other advancements include but not limited to photon-counting detectors (PCDs), tomosynthesis, dual-energy imaging, computer-aided detection and diagnosis, automatic image stitching, mobile DR, wireless flat-panel detectors (FPDs), mobile computed radiography (CR) and new structured phosphors in computer radiography, ...

What is the new type of radiology? ›

The field of radiology is being transformed by advanced visualization techniques such as 3D rendering, virtual reality (VR), and augmented reality (AR). These innovative technologies provide immersive and highly detailed views, significantly enhancing anatomical understanding.
