Another Corning sweep and more top performances from STAC track & field championships (2024)

Corning's boys and girls extended their title streaks Wednesday night at the Southern Tier Athletic Conference outdoor track & field championships at Johnson City High School.

The Corning girls cruised to a fourth consecutive team title and 12th in the last 14 conference championships, more than doubling up the point total of runner-up Ithaca.

Corning's boys were pushed by Ithaca but prevailed for a sixth straight championship. The Hawks finished with 94.5 points and Ithaca accumulated 77.

Individual spotlight

Maine-Endwell senior Panayiota Anastos and Chenango Valley freshman Mack Patterson have both excelled in the shot put and discus this season. That continued Wednesday as each swept those events.

Some of New York's top distance runners went head-to-head.

In the girls 1500 meters, Ithaca freshman Tsadia Bercuvitz won in 4:37.84 and Corning senior Sarah Lawson took second in 4:38.91. Both posted top-25 times in New York this season according to MileSplit's data base. Bercuvitz ran the anchor for Ithaca's winning 3200 relay.

The boys 1600 and 800 races featured a pair of state champions in Ithaca junior Riley Hubisz and Corning senior Douglas Cornfield. Hubisz won the 1600 in 4:18.54, a top-10 time in New York this season. Cornfield finished second in 4:26.14. The finishing order was swapped in the 800, where Cornfield edged Hubisz by two-tenths of a second with a time of 1:58.68.
