About NYU Grossman School of Medicine | NYU Langone Health (2024)

NYU Grossman School of Medicine isproud to have trained as well as fostered the innovations of thousands of physicians and scientists who have helped shape the course of medical history. Our students, faculty, and staff have contributed to groundbreaking discoveries that have improved the health of people around the world. As an integral part of NYU Langone Health, we are committed to a trifold mission of patient care, medical education, and scientific research.

Our 29 academic departments include nationally and internationally recognized faculty in clinical and basic sciences. We strive to bring together the best and brightest to cultivate collaboration across disciplines, and to facilitate breakthroughs that address today’s biggest challenges in medicine.

We have a long history of excellence, beginning in 1841 when six eminent physician–scientists opened the medical college that would become NYU School of Medicine. In November 2019, the school was renamed NYU Grossman School of Medicine to honor current dean and CEO Robert I. Grossman, MD.

For more than 175 years, our pioneers in medicine defined the fundamentals of what is now our mission: to serve, to teach, and to discover.

Transforming Medical and Science Education

We are proud to offer every student enrolled in our MD degree program Full-Tuition Scholarships as part of our tuition-free initiative. We believe providing tuition-free education will lead to better patient care and will benefit society as a whole by turning the best and brightest future physicians into leaders with the potential to transform healthcare.

We have earned national attention in recent years for reimagining medical education with our innovative three-year MD degree program and our Curriculum for the 21st Century. As leaders in medical education reform, we believe our medical school curriculum should address the scientific, social, and economic aspects of the healthcare system.

We also believe in using the latest technology to enrich medical education, such as web-based surgical training, interactive simulation modalities, and big data analysis. Our Institute for Innovations in Medical Education focuses specifically on creating technology that can be used in medical training and directly benefit patients, and is one of the largest medical education innovation groups in the country. NYSIM—our joint venture with City University of New York—is a 25,000-square-foot state-of-the-art simulation center that fosters clinical excellence and improved communication, patient safety, and quality of healthcare delivery.

Our medical students provide care to New York City’s diverse population through our affiliations with area hospitals, including the VA NY Harbor Healthcare System and NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue, the nation’s oldest public hospital. These affiliations help to broaden the scope and enhance the quality of students’ education and training. We believe it’s important to nurture future healthcare leaders, so in addition to a medical degree, we offer dual MD/master’s degrees in business administration, public administration, global health, translational research, and bioethics.
