Jeep is finally launching its first electric vehicle in the U.S. Called the Wagoneer S, this new SUV model was first announced in September 2022 and will arrive later this year as a fully loaded Launch Edition model with a 600-hp powertrain, all-wheel drive, and an impressive claim that it will offer over 300 miles of range on a single charge.
Size and Positioning
Smaller than the Grand Cherokee, the Wagoneer S looks lower and sleeker than anything else in the Jeep lineup. It's a two-row, five-seat SUV straddling the compact and mid-size segments. Design cues are familiar from elsewhere in the Jeep lineup, but with a twist: the seven-slot grille, for instance, doesn't feature any actual air intakes and is instead highlighted with lighting elements between the slots. An interesting spoiler rounds out the rear end, and the liftgate has a sharply raked angle; Jeep says it has an 0.29 drag coefficient.
Though its name is confusing given the existence of the full-size Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer SUVs, we think the Wagoneer moniker applied here simply signifies that Jeep is positioning this as a premium entry. It appears intended to compete with luxury electric SUVs such as the Tesla Model Y, Cadillac Lyriq, and Genesis Electrified GV70.
Inside, the look is similar to the Grand Wagoneer full-size SUV's, with a two-spoke steering wheel and wall-to-wall screens comprising the digital gauge cluster, the central infotainment display, and a passenger-side display. A McIntosh audio system is standard on the Launch Edition, and this trim will come fully loaded with features such as heated and cooled front and rear seats, a head-up display, and a full suite of driver-assist systems. The only options are a red leather interior and a towing package (the max towing capacity is 3400 pounds).

Powertrain and Range Details
A 600-hp setup with front and rear electric motors is the only powertrain choice on the Wagoneer S Launch Edition. Jeep claims it will reach 60 mph in a swift 3.4 seconds. We'd expect lower-output electric variants to join the lineup later on. And the Wagoneer S will reportedly be offered with the Hurricane inline-six in the future—not a huge surprise since we know that its STLA Large platform can accommodate ICE powertrains, as in the new Dodge Charger.
This model has a claimed range of over 300 miles, although EPA estimates aren't available yet. Jeep says that the battery has a capacity of 100.5 kWh, but we think its usable capacity will be similar to the Charger Daytona EV's 93.9-kWh usable capacity. Charging-wise, Jeep estimates it will go from 20 percent to 80 percent in 23 minutes on a DC fast-charger.

Price and Availability
With its low stance, limited ground clearance, and lack of any sort of low range, the Wagoneer S doesn't seem at all intended for off-roading. But there is a Wagoneer S Trailhawk concept with more ground clearance and all-terrain tires that previews an upcoming rugged trim level that should reach production later on. Reservations open tomorrow for the $71,995 Wagoneer S Launch Edition, and deliveries will start later this year. Look for more information on these additional variants to come.
