20 of the Most Fuel-Efficient Gas-Engine Crossovers (2024)

20 of the Most Fuel-Efficient Gas-Engine Crossovers (1)

A few decades ago, if you wanted a vehicle with good fuel economy, your choice was between a small sedan and an even smaller hatchback. If you wanted something with four-wheel drive, it meant a truck chassis, probably a thirsty V6 or V8 and a EPA rating in the teens. But now we can have the best of both worlds. These crossovers (and a few SUVs) are almost as efficient as modern sedans and hatchbacks, and they're way more efficient than the sedans and hatchbacks of old. We picked the top-five sellers in each class and ranked them by their combined miles per gallon. Drive layouts range from front- to rear- to all-wheel drive. We didn't include hybrid or electric options on this list; for now we're talking conventional internal combustion powertrains only. We'll look at hybrid and electric crossovers in another segment.
